Strong Trade Winds and Increased Rain Expected in Hawaii

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Trade winds are intensifying across the Hawaiian Islands as a robust high-pressure system north of the state continues to strengthen and drift eastward.

First Alert Forecast: Hold on, gusty trades will pick up

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Trade winds are intensifying across the Hawaiian Islands as a robust high-pressure system north of the state continues to strengthen and drift eastward. This will keep the winds in the moderate to breezy category well into next week, with gusty conditions expected, particularly in exposed regions and higher elevations.

The islands are also poised for several waves of moisture, leading to increased rainfall. The initial surge is forecasted for Friday afternoon and evening, affecting the entire state. A second, potentially stronger influx of moisture is anticipated from late Sunday into Monday, with significant shower activity likely over the eastern islands, including Maui County and the Big Island. The windward and mountainous areas are expected to have the highest chances for showers, especially overnight and early mornings. Looking ahead, forecasters are monitoring another system that might approach next Thursday, though confidence in its impact is currently low. Additionally, an upper-level disturbance could form mid-next week, potentially bringing more tropical moisture and elevating the risk of heavy rainfall.

Regarding ocean conditions, surf along north and west-facing shores is expected to increase to near or slightly above seasonal levels from Friday into Saturday before gradually subsiding. South shore surf may also rise above seasonal levels on Friday but will slow down later. As the trade winds strengthen, east-facing shores will experience rougher surf, anticipated to surpass seasonal levels this weekend and persist into early next week. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for typically windy areas around Maui and the Big Island through Saturday evening.
