Hawaii LGBT Legacy Foundation Establishes Continuous Community Hub for Authenticity

HONOLULU (Hawaii News Now) – In anticipation of the upcoming Honolulu Pride Parade, the Hawaii LGBT Legacy Foundation is being highlighted for its continuous efforts throughout the year. Established in 2008 by a collective of queer leaders, the foundation is dedicated to fostering a community where individuals can embrace their authentic selves.

Executive Director Randy Soriano noted the foundation’s inception during a time when the fight for marriage equality was prominent. Led by founder Dr. McEwan and a small initial board, the focus has been on creating unity within the community. Notable initiatives include Pride 365, designed to extend the supportive environment of Honolulu Pride beyond October, and programs such as Rainbow Town Halls and monthly Rainbow Support Circles aimed at connecting and aiding community members.

One key program, Kupuna Movie Mornings, was developed in response to a survey that identified social isolation among elderly community members during the pandemic. In collaboration with Hawaii Theatre, the foundation hosts free vintage movie screenings, providing an opportunity for kupuna to come together and engage socially. Participants like Heather Ross have shared their appreciation for the connections made through these events. Board member Mark Imaizumi emphasized the importance of making space for the older generation to be valued and heard.
