A 21-year-old named Ocean Silva traveled from Boston to Honolulu with the intention of donating his kidney to his mother, Lisa, who resides in Makaha. Ocean expressed that the decision was an obvious choice for him as he didn’t want his mother to endure a long wait on the donor list.
Lisa reflected on Ocean’s challenges as a newborn suffering from a serious illness, now turning the tides as he prepares to care for her. Although he feels some nerves about undergoing major surgery for the first time, Ocean remains confident, stating, “I feel like it’s the least I could do… it’s my mother. She gave me everything. How could I not do this for her?” As they share moments by the beach and enjoy meals together before the procedure, Ocean is aware that living with one kidney will require some lifestyle changes. The expected recovery period spans six to eight weeks. In the meantime, family friends are fundraising for Help Hope Live to assist with the uncovered medical costs of the transplant.
