‘Nothing to hide’: Laie zip line project partner addresses violations, concerns

HONOLULU (Hawaii News Now) – Leaders of the controversial zip line project in Laie have for the first time welcomed media to discuss the project’s building violations confirmed by the Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP). Earlier this month, it was established that tour company CLIMB Works did not have the necessary grading permit and other violations need addressing. The zip line project aims to construct nine segments in the mountains above the Polynesian Cultural Center.

During a site visit and interview, project partner Aaron Campbell acknowledged the infractions, stating, “We take responsibility for that, and we learn from it.” He presented the HNN crew with images of two wooden decks already built along a ridge. While expressing his commitment toward the community, Campbell emphasized the educational aspects of the zip line, which aims to share local history and environmental stewardship with visitors. However, local resident Rebekah Strain voiced concerns, stressing the importance of following proper permitting procedures to minimize environmental impact. As the company works to correct the violations, a timeline for project completion remains uncertain, with DPP indicating the need for further reviews and permitting processes.
