HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A new bipartisan law focused on preventing seafood fraud has been enacted. President Donald Trump signed the Illegal Red Snapper and Tuna Enforcement Act on Tuesday, a measure supported by U.S. Senators Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Katie Britt, R-Alabama, Tommy Tuberville, R-Alabama, and Roger Wicker, R-Mississippi.
This legislation establishes standardized methods for tracking the origins of red snapper and certain species of tuna. It includes plans for a field test kit aimed at determining whether these fish were sourced from U.S. or foreign waters. Such measures are intended to empower law enforcement agencies to intercept illegally sourced or inaccurately labeled fish before they reach American markets. According to Schatz, this law provides law enforcement with essential tools to ensure transparency and support local fishermen against imports.
