‘Absolutely amazing’: K9 helps find missing man on Hawaii Island

HONOLULU (Hawaii News Now) – A police K9 named Trina played a vital role in the rescue of a 70-year-old man who had been missing for almost two days. On Monday night, Trina, a 3-year-old Labrador Retriever, along with her handler, Officer Christopher Ross, discovered David Arai of Oahu within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, approximately two miles from where his rental car had been located.

Arai was hospitalized due to dehydration and exposure following his ordeal. Officer Ross shared that locating Arai was crucial, stating, “I wouldn’t want to know what would happen if we didn’t locate him.” To help in the search, Trina sniffed Arai’s pillow case for his scent. Ross noted the difficult search conditions, which included rain, darkness, and a muddy trail, emphasizing the dangers of being outdoors under such circumstances for any length of time.
