HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A 45-inch ball python, deemed illegal, was captured on the Leeward Coast near Camp Waianae over the weekend. Following a report of a snake sighting on Saturday night, police contacted the Hawaiian Humane Society, which then alerted the Hawaii Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity (DAB).
According to Jessica Ann Miura, a DAB plant quarantine inspector, two inspectors were dispatched to the scene where the snake had already been contained. The nonvenomous python was secured by biosecurity officers near Haleahi Road. Currently, testing is being conducted to ascertain the snake’s sex, as officials express concerns regarding potential breeding with illegal animals. Residents are reminded that the possession of snakes is against the law in Hawaii, with violations potentially resulting in fines and imprisonment. The python is to remain in state custody while authorities coordinate its future placement.
