HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday for Hawaii’s largest public housing redevelopment initiative, the Mayor Wright Homes project. This significant effort aims to transform the nearly 75-year-old site into a mixed-income community, featuring seven times the number of homes compared to the existing facilities in the Kalihi-Palama area, close to downtown Honolulu.
Officials from the state Public Housing Authority and developer Highridge Costa are collaborating to create a complex comprising over 2,400 rental units of various sizes, along with public housing units, condominiums, and commercial spaces across ten towers. Governor Josh Green emphasized the project’s importance in addressing housing stability, which he stated is vital for overall health and well-being. The first building is slated to open in 2029, with the entire redevelopment anticipated to take about 15 years.
