DMV Enhancements Designed to Simplify License Renewals
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Oahu drivers will notice enhancements during their next DMV visit for license renewals.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Oahu drivers will notice enhancements during their next DMV visit for license renewals. The city has made adjustments to improve the process, allowing drivers to submit applications and take photos at a single counter. “It increases our capacity of the services that we can provide because we’re no longer bottlenecking our services down to a few photo windows,” said Department of Customer Services Director Kim Hashiro.
Rather than receiving a temporary card, drivers will now get their old license back with a hole punched through it and a new receipt-like document that contains all the essential information and a QR code. This QR code not only tracks the status of the new license but also serves as validation for driving while waiting for the renewal. With the new system, customers can expect faster delivery of their plastic cards—within five weeks or less—compared to the previous six to eight weeks. These improvements are a part of a broader update to Hawaii’s ID and license production systems, which aims to eventually enable most renewals online.
