Nonprofit CEO responds after audit flags Vegas trip expenses

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The CEO of HomeAid, a nonprofit involved in a review of a state housing program, has responded to inquiries regarding expenditures following a critical audit. The audit, which examined the Statewide Office on Homelessness and Housing Solutions and Governor Josh Green’s Kauhale Initiative, flagged $5,200 claimed for a Las Vegas trip, including questionable charges such as a first-class airline upgrade and minibar expenses.

HomeAid’s CEO Kimo Carvalho stated, “We took immediate action the moment this was brought to light. We ensured that taxpayers did not incur these costs, and the issue has already been rectified.” Furthermore, he mentioned that financial reconciliations led him to repay around $17,982 to HomeAid while receiving $6,465 for state-related expenses. Governor Green emphasized the larger impact of the Kauhale projects, which he claims have benefited 2,900 individuals and significantly reduced emergency room visits among the homeless population.
