HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Sean Sakaida, 44, who served as the head wrestling coach at Moanalua High School, appeared in federal court on Monday. He pleaded not guilty to a series of serious charges, which include child pornography and child sex trafficking.
The federal indictment outlines communications between Sakaida and a minor victim via WhatsApp between 2025 and the present, revealing that he allegedly shared videos of sexual acts involving the teen. Additionally, he is charged with enticing another minor to participate in a commercial sex act.
A source familiar with the Moanalua High wrestling team, who requested anonymity, expressed concern over Sakaida’s relationship with a teen athlete, remarking that it raised significant red flags. This source indicated that it was common knowledge among coaches and athletes that Sakaida was spending time alone with the athlete, driving her home after practices and events. “No coach should be alone with a minor athlete,” the source stated, emphasizing the need for accountability in youth sports.
Advocates like Andrew Aguirre from the nonprofit Hoʻōla Nā Pua, which focuses on preventing child exploitation, recommend that adults always avoid one-on-one situations with minors. Crystal Glendon, an attorney involved in similar cases, echoed this sentiment, highlighting potential dangers when a coach has such contact with students.
Furthermore, a Family Court judge has issued a 20-year protection order against Sakaida, requested by his ex-girlfriend and their children. HNN has reached out to the Department of Education for information regarding any current investigations into coaches or administrative personnel in light of this case.
