HONOLULU (Hawaii News Now) – Emergency repairs are currently in progress following a wastewater overflow that was detected on Thursday morning at Kīhei Wastewater Pump Station No. 6, situated in Kalama Park. The County of Maui Department of Environmental Management has indicated that this overflow is the result of a mechanical failure within the force main of the pumping station.
While the overflow has not impacted the ocean, it has resulted in closures affecting various park areas, including the tennis and basketball courts, soccer field, and Little League baseball field. Additionally, Kīhei Fire Station and nearby properties are also impacted. Crews are on-site to evaluate the situation and will continue repairs throughout the day. Residents in the South Maui region, including Sugar Beach, Kīhei, Wailea, and Makena, are urged to minimize water usage to alleviate pressure on the wastewater collection system. The county has also advised against travel to the area until further updates are provided.
