HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Kaleima’o Village, a new affordable housing complex in Ewa Beach, is preparing to accommodate families by the end of October, with 126 units available on a 3.7-acre city-owned site along Renton Road. This project represents a collaboration between public and private sectors in addressing affordable housing needs.
Project manager Stanford Carr Jr. stated that the units will remain affordable for a period of 61 years, with affordability determined by HUD standards. Rent prices will vary based on tenant income, with the lowest units priced between $700 and $900 per month reserved for families earning 30% or less of the Area Median Income. The remaining 119 units will cater to tenants earning 60% of the AMI, with rents spanning from just over $1,500 to $2,100 a month. More than 1,000 applications have been submitted as the project nears completion, which is currently under budget at about $60 million, according to Carr.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green emphasized the community aspect, indicating that residents will include essential workers such as firefighters and teachers. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi noted the importance of keeping families in the community to foster connection and support. The developers are also planning future affordable housing initiatives at several other locations across the island.
