HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Honolulu Department of Transportation Services (DTS) is taking steps to enhance pedestrian safety by installing new signage at eight high-traffic locations across Oahu. These signs display the frequency with which drivers stop for pedestrians and are part of the Oahu Vision Zero initiative aimed at reducing road casualties.

The initiative coincides with October being recognized as Pedestrian Safety Month. DTS calculated driver stopping rates using data from observations of a worker crossing various roads in marked crosswalks over a one-hour period. Current stopping rates at these intersections range from 47% to 77%, with an average of 66%, representing an improvement from the 53% rate recorded prior to the campaign. It is noted that one in 10 fatal crashes on Oahu involves motorists who do not stop for pedestrians.
