HONOLULU (Hawaii News Now) – The ongoing El Niño season has posed significant challenges for a family-operated restaurant on Oahu. The Terai family, owners of Peace Cafe in Moiliili, have been dealing with damages from multiple storms. Initially, they hoped to recover from the impacts of the Kona lows in March, but subsequent storms have compounded the issues they face.
Repair costs are estimated to exceed $20,000. “Watching my parents work so hard is definitely tough,” shared Moana Terai, daughter of the owners. Despite these challenges, the Terais continue to serve their vegan dishes to loyal customers. Employee David Melzack noted that while the ambiance remains inviting, the broken air conditioning has left staff working in a hot environment. “The storm has left us feeling grateful for the community support we’ve received,” added Terai. With limited insurance, the cafe’s financial burden to cover repairs weighs heavily on the family.
